Here’s what happens: Nerve fibers that have been damaged by the virus send exaggerated pain signals from your skin to your brain. Called postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN, this ongoing severe pain affects 10% to 18% of people who get shingles and is more common among people who are older or immune-compromised.
